At St Andrew’s Music School, we believe that every child should have the opportunity to learn and perform music. Our mission is to provide music education and performing opportunities to children of all backgrounds and circumstances, completely free of charge.
Music brings such joy to children, and countless studies have proved its value for improving confidence, team skills and cerebral development. With so few schools now having access to specialist music teachers our work at SAMS has never been so crucial.
Our work at SAMS is primarily threefold:

Outreach with local schools
Every week, two of our expert music teachers go into Cherry Hinton Primary School to lead music curriculum teaching with two year groups. Last term (Autumn 2025) we worked with years 1 and 2, focussing on healthy and confident vocal production, understanding pitch, and recognising the difference between beat and rhythm. This term (Spring 2026) we are working with years 3 and 4 on understanding staff notation and singing in multiple parts.
Our teachers also make occasional visits to other local schools to give music assemblies. We would like to offer regular outreach work at these schools too, when we have raised enough money to do so.
Music clubs and choirs
We run two after-school activity groups currently, a Music Club and our Celebration Singers choir. Both these groups are open to all ages and abilities, and are completely free of charge. Our students are divided into groups according to their levels of experience, and learn music theory, aural skills, and sometimes even conducting!
Our Celebration Singers learn a variety of songs from around the world, often splitting into three or even four parts. Learning to sing as part of a group is invaluable for young children developing their confidence, creativity and teamwork. And of course, it’s great fun too!
Our clubs often ends with a piece of Listening Music, where we sit (or lie down), and then discuss the music we have heard, what it means to us, and how it makes us feel.

Free instrumental tuition
We are in the early stages of developing our free lessons programme, which is currently focused on encouraging young people to learn the organ. We are fortunate to be hosted by St Andrew’s Church, Cherry Hinton, which has a beautiful 2-manual tracker instrument, ideal for teaching and practice.
If you know a young person who would like to learn the organ, please get in touch!
We hope in future to be able to expand this programme to all instruments - watch this space!
